You may have recently observed a coworker holding meetings in front of a bright, lantern-filled market or showing up to a casual conversation dressed as an animated moon. Those Google Meet effects were made to commemorate Ramadan, the month in which Muslims all across the world celebrate, fast, reflect, and gather as a community.Meet uses MediaPipe, a Google machine learning framework developed for live and streaming video processing, to detect the distinction between the person and the rest of the frame. MediaPipe use a combination of machine learning and signal processing to dissect each still image of your video stream, separating the person from the scene – allowing Meet to replace your living room or other workstation with the backdrop of your choice. Google Meet collaborates with artists from around the globe to create various filters and effects. The process begins with planning the content strategy for the entire year, including permanent backgrounds, effects, and seasonal events. The team works closely with Google’s Employee Resource Groups, such as Muslims@Google, to ensure cultural authenticity and understanding. For the Ramadan effects, the team collaborated with Muslims@Google to capture the essence of street markets and the communal spirit during Ramadan. These markets hold significance as they become vibrant gathering places for breaking fast and connecting with loved ones. The collaboration allows Meet to incorporate inclusive and culturally relevant backgrounds. Lauren Morrison, the lead designer for Meet’s video effects, finds joy in working with talented artists worldwide and learning about diverse imagery and holidays as they strive to make Meet a more inclusive platform.
